I wonder if there are any committed fire-breathing legitimists out there who can help me with this one. Hugh Capet does not seem to be any sort of specially inspiring or providential figure. He doesn’t make much sense as a legitimist hero given he is essentially a usurper. The Carolingians seem much more likely candidates for special protection. Many of the direct Capetians were deeply annoying and the later Capetians spend lots of time conspiring with the Turks and Protestants to the detriment of Christendom in pursuit of their vendetta against the (much nicer) Habsburgs. When they weren’t doing that they were promoting Gallicanism or fiddling with the liturgy to exclude elements averse to Absolutism or favourable to Papal authority. But, as someone pointed out to me a few months ago, the mission of St Joan of Arc seems to be the only instance of God intervening to save a particular Christian dynasty. Furthermore, God gave them one hundred years notice of the French Revolution through St Margaret Mary and instructions as to how to avoid it.

“Make it known to the eldest son of my Sacred Heart that, since his temporal birth was obtained by devotion to the merits of my Holy Infancy, in the same way he will obtain his birth to eternal glory by his consecration to my Adorable Heart. My Heart wants to reign in his palace, to be painted on his standards and engraved on his weapons in order to make them victorious against all his enemies as well as those of Holy Church. My Father himself wants to help carry out his plan, which is the construction of a public building where the painting of my Sacred Heart would be placed to receive there homage from all of France.”

That this was indeed the purpose of the revelation of 17th June 1689, and that Louis XVI tried at the last minute to implement these instructions, seems to be confirmed by a revelation to Sr. Lucia of Fatima in August 1931 about the Pope’s consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart “Make it known to My ministers that, given they follow the example of the King of France in delaying the execution of My request, they will follow him into misfortune.” Why then is the King of France the eldest son of the Lord’s Sacred Heart? Why did God preserve the Capetian dynasty? Has God given up on them in favour of the Russians?
