Abbot Hugh of Pluscarden has been appointed successor of St Machar (bishop of Aberdeen). For those who don’t know Pluscarden is a Mediaeval Abbey in the far North East of Scotland which was purchaced and restored by the Marquess of Bute. It still lacks its nave but the monks seem to live a proper Benedictine life up there farming and praying. They wear white like the ex-Anglican monks who founded their mother Abbey (Prinknash) and as the monks who lived there before the Reformation also did. The liturgy is new rite but ad orientem and Gregorian in Latin. All eight offices are sung every day. I’ve never read any of his books but he seems to run a pretty good Abbey up there. I pray he brings many blessings to the diocese.
