It seems that last minute intervention from the civil power ensured the preservation of Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School (Britain’s best Comprehensive) from destruction at the hands of the Archbishop. This is obviously absurd. On the other hand, the laity are not the the world for which Christ did not pray nor are the clergy to be identified with the Church (still less the faithful). Mr Gove of course is one of the separated brethren. The proper role of the state is as the lay arm of the Church (not the lay arm of the hierarchy). One of the wonderful things about Britain is that there is essentaily nothing wrong with our constitution other than the people and the monarch have the wrong religion. All we need to do is to pray and work for their conversion and then change the established religion and everything will be fine (unlike the Americans who would have to repeal the First Amendment). So here we have a glimpse of how things might work in a happier world. After all the Secretary of State did not exercise usurped jurisdiction over the spiritual power he just proposed  a little investigation of the facts. “For every one that does evil hates the light and comes not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. But he that does truth comes to the light, that his works may be made manifest: because they are done in God.”
