Lots of people who do not even describe themselves as Christians think the ‘Church’ of England should have women ‘bishops’. What is the obvious conclusion? An enthusiasm for female clergy is characteristic of those with a weak or no grasp of Christianity. What is Rowen Williams’s conclusion? These people are committed to the ‘Church’ after all. It must be very distressing for the Anglicans. They have humbled themselves before the world, and bowed down to her with their faces toward the earth, and licked up the dust of her feet and she spurns them and walks away. In their Gadarene rush after their departing beloved they seek to strip themselves as fast as they can of each and every residual attachment to the verbal and external forms of the Gospel. In their frantic rush they have become tangled in their own garments and tripped over the residual question of women bishops. They weep and bang their fists upon the dust. “And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If any one worships the beast and its image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also shall drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured unmixed into the cup of his anger, and he shall be tormented with fire and sulphur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.  And the smoke of their torment goes up for ever and ever; and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.'”
