Horror! A wise Dominican Nun argued to me the other day that the very structure of the English language is based on the the fact that most of the ancestors of its English speakers were Roman Britons. Many of the elements we think came in through the Normans (she argued) actually reflect that for most of its speakers it was foreign language imposed on them (through socio-economic necessity) by Anglo Saxon conquest. This fact is obscured by the fact that pre-1066 Anglo-Saxon texts are from elite (so ethnically Anglo-Saxon sources). Once the Anglo-Saxons ceased to be the elite this Bringlish swamped the ‘pure’ dialect of the former conquerors. consequently, once English emerged again from under the Norman yoke Anglo-Saxon was gone and Bringlish was all that remained.
